Three weeks from now, the way paddles get approved in this sport changes. Most of the coverage has focused on the number — 2,100 RPM — and we covered that too. What almost nobody has written about is the object that makes the number possible: a pickleball, covered in printed markers, built by a company headquartered twenty-five miles south of Boston.
What is the pickleball spin test ball?
USA Pickleball has historically policed spin indirectly. It measured how rough a paddle face was and what its coefficient of friction came out to, on the theory that a grippier surface produces more spin. Reasonable logic, but it measured the cause rather than the effect.
The new Spin Rate Test measures the effect. Per USA Pickleball’s own explanation of the technology behind the test, the setup works like this:
- A specially marked ball is fired from a cannon toward a stationary paddle.
- A dual-camera system tracks multiple markers on the ball through flight and impact.
- Proprietary software automatically calculates the resulting RPM — no technician counting video frames by hand.
That last point is the one that matters for fairness. Automating the calculation removes operator judgment from the result, which is what makes the number repeatable across hundreds of paddle submissions. USA Pickleball explicitly cites improved accuracy and repeatability over the older single-camera approach.
Who actually built it?
Two companies, each solving a completely different problem.
Image Systems — a Sweden-based motion-analysis company — supplied the high-speed tracking. Their proprietary marker technology and software capture the ball, process the data and export an RPM figure, and per USA Pickleball the system also filters out bad data that simpler setups would not catch.
Franklin Sports handled the ball. And this is the part with a genuine New England connection. Franklin’s own announcements carry a Stoughton, Massachusetts dateline, and the company describes itself as founded by Irving Franklin in 1946, now selling more than 10,000 products across categories, with partnerships including Major League Baseball. In pickleball specifically, Franklin signed world No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters to a long-term deal in January 2026.
So the governing body needed a ball manufactured to laboratory tolerances, and it went to a company that has been making sporting goods in Massachusetts for eighty years.
Why is printing on a pickleball so difficult?
This is the detail I found genuinely interesting, and it is the reason the project took over a year rather than a month.
Image Systems’ software needs to identify and track multiple markers on the ball as it travels at speed. Those markers have to sit at a precise size, orientation and alignment. But a pickleball is a sphere with holes in it, and as USA Pickleball puts it, an image applied to a curved surface naturally distorts as it follows the ball’s contours.
Franklin had to:
- Account for that deformation while still landing the markers where the software expects them.
- Make it repeatable. One perfect prototype is useless — every ball used across the testing program has to hold the same tolerances.
- Develop a production process capable of doing that consistently at volume.
Without that, the cameras and software have nothing reliable to look at. As USA Pickleball notes, the test ball is the simplest-looking component in the entire system and the one that took the most problem-solving.
What does the October 1 date actually change for you?
For the overwhelming majority of players reading this in New England: nothing at all.
The rule USA Pickleball published in its implementation timeline update is that a certified paddle must comply with the standards that were in effect at the time it was certified. Concretely:
- Beginning October 1, 2026, paddles submitted for certification must measure 2,100 RPM or less.
- Until then, paddles meeting the current surface-roughness and friction standards can still be certified under the existing rules.
- Paddles already on the Approved Paddle List stay approved. Your bag is fine.
- The upper thresholds for surface roughness and coefficient of friction are being replaced by a measurement of record — recorded, no longer a pass/fail ceiling.
- The official test procedure went out to manufacturers on July 15, 2026.
One more piece worth knowing, because it changes the competitive landscape: USA Pickleball says that in response to manufacturer feedback, the Image Systems camera platform and the Franklin-built test ball will both be commercially available for purchase. Brands will be able to test to the official standard in their own labs before they submit. That is a meaningful shift from the guesswork of the roughness era — and a reason to expect fewer surprise de-certifications.

What do Franklin’s own paddles measure in our database?
Here is the obvious question, and I would rather answer it with numbers than leave it hanging: the company that builds the official spin-measuring ball also sells paddles that have to pass the test. So where do Franklin’s paddles actually sit on spin?
Dead average. Across our database of 781 paddles, the 590 with a published spin score average 6.29. Franklin has 23 paddles in the database, 22 of them scored, and they average 6.26. Statistically indistinguishable from the field.
But the internal spread is the real story:

These spin scores are a 0–10 scale derived from independent third-party testing published by John Kew — they are not USA Pickleball RPM measurements, and there is no public conversion between the two. A paddle scoring 8.7 on our scale is not reported as being near or over 2,100 RPM. Treat our numbers as a way to compare paddles against each other, and USA Pickleball’s number as the only thing that decides certification. Also note the T700 carbon C45 line is the newest generation, while the Carbon STK models date to 2022 — the low scores there reflect an older face technology, not a defect.
The pattern is still worth naming: Franklin’s newest premium line is among the grippiest in our catalog, arriving exactly as the sport puts a ceiling on grip. That is not a scandal — the cap applies to new submissions, and Franklin’s paddles go through the same certification as everyone else’s. But it is a fair illustration of why the industry pushed for a measurable standard and purchasable test equipment rather than a moving target.

What I would do with this if I were buying a paddle this fall
- Do not panic-buy a high-spin paddle. Existing approvals hold. Buying to beat a deadline that does not apply to you is how people end up with a paddle that does not suit their game.
- Do not panic-sell one either. There is no de-certification wave in the published timeline.
- Do check the Approved Paddle List if you play sanctioned tournaments, since that is the list referees work from.
