Quick answer: Discontinued pickleball paddles are now the norm within about three years. In Pickleball Studio’s database of 620 paddles, every 2021 and 2022 release is marked discontinued, along with 53% of 2023 releases and 36% of 2024 releases. Discontinued models weren’t cheaper at launch: the median list price is about $199 either way.

The 30-second version

  • 206 of 620 are gone. Pickleball Studio marks 206 paddles discontinued, 393 current and 21 pending.
  • About three years is the half-life. 53% of 2023 releases are discontinued, against 15% of 2025 releases.
  • Price doesn’t protect a paddle. Discontinued and current models share a median list price of about $199.
  • Older generations go first. 54% of Gen 1 paddles are discontinued, against 11% of Gen 4.

If you’ve ever gone to rebuy the paddle you love and found it gone, you’re not unlucky. Paddle models now turn over faster than most players replace their own paddles. Here’s what Pickleball Studio’s data shows about discontinued pickleball paddles, and what to do about it.

How fast are pickleball paddles discontinued?

Pickleball paddles are discontinued fast: about half of a given year’s releases are gone within roughly three years. That’s the pattern in Pickleball Studio’s paddle database, which tags each paddle it tracks as tested, pending or discontinued. We pulled all 620 records on October 24, 2026.

Release year Paddles Discontinued Share
2021 16 16 100%
2022 25 25 100%
2023 76 40 53%
2024 111 40 36%
2025 176 27 15%
2026 138 12 9%

The 2026 row leaves out 21 pending paddles. Another 56 records have no release year (46 discontinued). Most discontinued 2026 entries were added to Studio’s database on one day in March, so treat that row with care.

Are discontinued pickleball paddles worse?

Not by price, which is the clearest signal we have. The median list price is $199 for current paddles and $199.99 for discontinued ones, so brands retire premium models just as readily as budget ones.

What does predict it is age and design generation. Studio groups paddles by construction generation, and the older groups have thinned out most:

  • Gen 1: 33 of 61 discontinued (54%).
  • Gen 2: 81 of 185 (44%).
  • Gen 3: 23 of 96 (24%).
  • Gen 4: 23 of 201 (11%).

Core material matters less. Among 2025 releases, 12% of foam-core paddles are discontinued against 19% of honeycomb-core paddles. That’s a gap, not a wipeout. Our paddle shakeout explainer covers the separate story of whole brands leaving the market.

Do some brands discontinue paddles faster than others?

Yes, brands discontinue paddles at very different rates. Among the nine brands with at least 20 paddles in Studio’s data, the discontinued share runs from 5% to 71%. JOOLA, the largest brand in the set, has 28 of 49 paddles marked discontinued: 11 from 2022 and 11 from 2024.

A high share usually means a brand refreshes its lineup often, not that its paddles were bad.

What should you do if your paddle is discontinued?

If your paddle is discontinued, you have three good options, and the right one depends on how much you like it.

  • Buy a backup now. If a model you love is two or three years old, the data says it’s living on borrowed time.
  • Find its closest match. Swing weight, shape and core thickness matter more than the name. Line it up against current models in Paddle Compare, start from your play style in the Paddle Finder, or browse the paddle catalog.
  • Check its numbers before you switch. Our swing weight guide explains why two paddles at the same weight can feel very different.

Before a tournament, check the USA Pickleball approved paddle list for your exact model. And if yours is simply worn out, our paddle replacement guide covers when it’s time.
