Short answer: pickleball in Waterville runs through two indoor clubs. Champion’s Fitness Club at 30 Elm Plaza has eight lined indoor courts — not the four that one national directory lists — and the Alfond Youth & Community Center at 126 North Street runs weekday open play that moved to 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. on September 8. If you are working off a directory listing, both of those details are probably wrong on your screen.
Waterville is one of those central Maine cities that quietly does better than its size suggests. Sixteen thousand people on the Kennebec, Colby College on the hill — and, it turns out, more indoor pickleball than most New England towns three times its size. It is also a town where almost every online listing I checked had something wrong in it.
The 30-second version

Where can you play pickleball in Waterville?
Two indoor venues carry the city, and they serve genuinely different players.
Champion’s Fitness Club — 30 Elm Plaza
This is the deepest pickleball program in central Maine, and the numbers come straight off the club’s own pickleball page:
- Eight official lined indoor courts, hard surface, lights, restrooms.
- Open play: Tuesday and Wednesday 1:00–3:00pm, Sunday 12:00–2:00pm.
- Usage fees: members $5 for an hour, up to $13 for four hours. Non-members $10 for an hour, up to $18 for four.
- Memberships: from $49/month for pickleball-only up to $144/month for a VIP couple. VIP tiers waive usage fees. There is a $50/month VIP tier for SilverSneakers, Renew Active and ASH members.
- Instruction: PPR-certified instructor Ken Blazej and PCI-certified instructor Doug McCosh. Private lessons run $43 (member) or $50 (non-member) for an hour; a group of four pays $20–$25 each.
- Contract court time: a standing weekly reservation for a full year, $150 for a one-hour slot up to $375 for three hours. Usage fees still apply on top.
One caution: when I checked, the clinic dates posted on that page were the summer session (June through September 6) and the calendar link was labeled June 2026. The fee tables look current; the dates do not. Call (207) 873-0571 before you plan a clinic around it.
Alfond Youth & Community Center — 126 North Street
The AYCC is a combined Boys & Girls Club and YMCA, and it is where the morning crowd plays. This is the detail nobody else has right: according to the AYCC’s own fall announcement, pickleball ran Mon–Fri 7:00–9:00am through September 4, and then shifted to Mon–Fri 9:00am–12:00pm as of Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
That is a three-hour block instead of two, at a completely different time of day. Every directory listing I found still shows one version or the other, and several show the old 7am slot. If you are 65 and you drove over for a 7:00am game last week, you found an empty gym.
A few other verified specifics from the same announcement: all three gym floors were refinished August 29–30, and building hours as of September 8 are Mon–Fri 5:00am–9:00pm, Sat & Sun 7:00am–7:00pm. Pickleball also appears on the AYCC’s fall athletics registration list. Membership is required; the front desk number is (207) 873-0684.
What I could not confirm: how many courts the AYCC actually sets up. Their own materials describe three gym floors but never publish a court count. One directory says four; another says six. I am not going to pick one for you — call and ask.
Why do the directories get Waterville wrong?
This is the part that makes Waterville worth writing about, because it is a clean case study in why you should never trust a court listing you have not cross-checked.
1. The court count is off by half. Global Pickleball Network’s page for Champion’s Fitness Club reads “Total courts: 4 / Indoor courts: 4 all year.” The club’s own website says, in plain text, that it has eight official lined pickleball courts. That is not a rounding difference — it is the difference between a rotation that moves and one that stalls. (Our court directory has it at eight.)
2. The schedule is a week stale. Covered above — the AYCC moved its block on September 8 and the aggregators have not caught up.
3. There is a second Waterville. Search for pickleball in Waterville and a good chunk of what comes back is Waterville, New York — a village in Oneida County. Its Babbott Park genuinely does have pickleball courts, off Route 12, and it shows up in search summaries with no state attached. It is 400 miles from Maine. This is the same trap we hit writing about Maine’s neighbors, and it catches out-of-state visitors constantly.
4. The City never mentions pickleball at all. I read the City of Waterville’s Parks & Recreation page, its Facilities page and its recreation chapter PDF. The word “pickleball” does not appear on any of them. Their facilities list covers playgrounds, parks and ballfields. Meanwhile several directories list two free outdoor courts at 152 North Street with permanent lines but no permanent nets.
I believe those outdoor courts exist — they are consistently described, and they sit right next to the AYCC in the North Street Recreation Area. But I could not confirm them from the City, so I am telling you that rather than repeating it as fact. Waterville Parks & Recreation is at 6 Wentworth Court, 207-680-4744, open Monday through Thursday 7:00am–5:00pm. Two minutes on the phone beats a wasted drive. If you go, bring a portable net.
What should you know before you go?
- Waterville is an indoor town. Two clubs, both indoor, both year-round. That is unusual for a city this size and it is the reason central Maine players drive here in February.
- Mornings belong to the AYCC, afternoons to Champion’s. The two schedules barely overlap, which is a nice accident — between them you can find a game most weekdays.
- Champion’s is the traveler-friendly one. Drop-in rates are published, non-members are welcome, and there is certified instruction on site.
- It is an easy detour. Waterville sits right on I-95, roughly 20 minutes north of Augusta, which makes it a reasonable stop between Portland and Bangor.
