Pickleball in Brunswick, ME: 8 Dedicated Courts and the Members-Only Catch

Brunswick is one of the few Maine towns where the pickleball story is not “we are hoping to get courts someday.” It already got them — eight of them, purpose-built, out on the old naval air station. What trips people up is that Brunswick has four different places to play and they run on four completely different sets of rules. Here is how to sort them out before you load the car.

Where can you play pickleball in Brunswick, ME?

There are four realistic options in town, and they are not interchangeable:

• The MARC — 220 Neptune Dr. Eight dedicated outdoor courts. Open to everyone, dawn to dusk, reservable. This is the default answer.
• Brunswick Recreation Center. Indoor gym pickleball run by Parks & Recreation on a posted gym schedule. Cheap, staffed, and the right call from November through March.
• Maine Pines Racquet & Fitness. A private racquet club with five pickleball courts lined onto its tennis courts, plus lessons and drill sessions.
• Pegasus and Neptune courts, Brunswick Landing. Outdoor courts managed by the Midcoast Maine Pickleball club — not open to the general public.

If you are visiting midcoast Maine and only want one address, take the MARC. If you live here and plan to play year round, you want a Rec Center membership and probably a club membership too.

What are the MARC courts actually like?

The Midcoast Athletic & Recreation Complex sits on Brunswick Landing, the redeveloped former naval air station, at 220 Neptune Drive. The town describes the eight courts as “designed for pickleball use only” — that phrase matters. These are not tennis courts with tape on them. They opened in June 2024, which by New England standards makes them practically new construction.

Three things to know before your first visit:

• They are reservable. That is a real advantage over the usual New England scramble, but it also means a court sitting empty is not necessarily a court you are allowed to take.
• The schedule changes every two weeks. From April to October, Parks & Recreation posts a bi-weekly schedule allocating the courts across open play, youth play, adult play, groups, programs, rentals and events. Right now the posted blocks run in three-week spans — the current one covers August 23 through September 12, 2026.
• Bring your own balls. The local club’s court notes specifically tell players to bring pickleballs to the MARC.

Dawn to dusk is a generous window in a Maine summer and a short one in November, which is exactly why the indoor option matters here.

How much does indoor pickleball at the Rec Center cost?

This is the part that surprises people from out of state. Brunswick Parks & Recreation runs indoor pickleball out of the Rec Center gym, and the pricing is close to nominal:

• You must hold a BASIC Rec Center membership — which is free.
• $2 per session for residents, $3 per session for non-residents.
• An 11-punch pass gets you one punch free: $20 for residents, $30 for non-residents.
• PRO Fitness members get a $10 discount on the virtual pickleball punch card.

The Rec Center also keeps a stock of paddles and pickleballs for players to use during sessions, and offers introductory and intermediate lessons. Lessons, youth pickleball and tournament registration all go through CivicRec. Play runs on a posted gym schedule, so check it the same way you would check the outdoor one.

For a beginner, that combination — free membership, $2 to play, loaner paddles, lessons on site — is about as low as the barrier to entry gets in New England. Are the Pegasus and Neptune courts open to the public?

No — and this is the single most useful thing in this guide.

Search for pickleball in Brunswick and you will find listings for outdoor courts at Pegasus Landing and on Neptune Drive. Several national court directories present them as places you can go play. According to Midcoast Maine Pickleball, the club that manages them, that is wrong: you must be a member of Midcoast Maine Pickleball or a resident of the apartments to use the outdoor courts at either Pegasus or Neptune. The club notes that the owner of the Pegasus court has posted a private property sign.

For the record, the club’s own details:

• Pegasus courts — 126 Pegasus St. Open play starts no earlier than 8:00 AM.
• Neptune courts — 74 Neptune Dr. Open play starts no earlier than 9:00 AM.
• Park along the street or in the Rec Center lot. The summer schedule lives on the club’s schedule page.

None of that makes the club unwelcoming — joining is the point, and a club membership is how you get access. It just means “drive to Pegasus Street and jump in” is a good way to have an awkward conversation. Take the MARC instead, or join.

What does Maine Pines offer?

Maine Pines Racquet & Fitness is the private club option. It has five pickleball courts altogether — three lined on tennis court #6 and two on tennis court #5, with nets that drop into place in seconds.

• Open play: Fridays 5–7pm. Non-members pay a $12 guest fee, and you reserve your spot.
• Group drill sessions: Mondays 12–1:30pm (advanced beginners and low intermediates) and 1:30–3pm (intermediates and above); Tuesdays 6–7:30pm (beginners and advanced beginners) and 7:30–9pm (intermediates and above). $10 members, $15 non-members.
• Pickleball 123 for brand-new players: Mondays 3–4pm, $65, which includes three weekly lessons plus court time and fitness privileges for the month.
• Private lessons run $50 an hour for members and $60 for non-members, with semi-private rates lower.

Because the pickleball courts are lined onto tennis courts, availability can get preempted by tennis. Call ahead: 207-729-8433. Where else can you play near Brunswick?

Brunswick sits in a good spot. Within a reasonable drive:

• Bath — McMann Field, 181 Congress Ave. No fixed schedule and no permanent nets, so bring your own net and balls. Good for a group that wants a court to itself.

The New England angle

I spend most of my court time in north central Massachusetts, and the thing I notice about Brunswick is that it solved the problem most of our towns are still arguing about. Eight dedicated courts is more than a lot of far bigger New England cities have managed, and the town got there by building on land the Navy left behind rather than by fighting over an existing tennis court.
