Short answer: pickleball in Lewiston runs out of three places. The city’s only dedicated courts are the four at North Temple Street, open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The tennis courts at Lewiston High School are open for play but you have to bring your own net. And indoor drop-in at the Lewiston Armory restarts the week of October 5, 2026 at $3 for residents.
Maine’s second-largest city spent decades with essentially no place to play. Groups borrowed tennis courts and gym floors. That changed in the fall of 2024, when Lewiston finished a four-court complex off North Temple Street — the first courts in the city actually built for the sport. Two years on, those courts are popular enough that the neighbors have taken the city to the council floor over them, and the posted hours are a live political question rather than a formality.
I live in Leominster and teach over in Gardner, so Lewiston–Auburn is the kind of setup I pay attention to: a mid-sized New England city where the play is real but almost none of it shows up correctly on the national directory sites. Here is what I verified from the city’s own systems.
The 30-second version
- North Temple Street (55 North Temple St.) — four dedicated outdoor courts, free, open 7 days, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Parking and a port-a-potty on site.
- That 7:00 p.m. close is enforced and contested. In June 2026 the City Council pulled these courts out of a proposal to extend park hours after neighbors objected to noise.
- Lewiston High School (156 East Ave.) — tennis courts open for pickleball, but bring your own net.
- Lewiston Armory (65 Central Ave.) — indoor drop-in returns the week of October 5, 2026, running to mid-May. $3 residents / $4 non-residents.
- Auburn is right across the river — four courts at the East Auburn School, lines at Edward Little High School, and winter play in the Hasty Gym at Pettengill Park.
Where can you play pickleball in Lewiston?
Three venues, and they cover three different seasons and moods.

None of that is exotic, but it is the part the aggregator sites get wrong. Several of them still list Lewiston as having no dedicated courts at all.
What should you know about the North Temple courts?
- They were the city’s first purpose-built courts. Before they opened, Lewiston-area groups played on borrowed tennis courts and indoors at the Armory.
- They cost roughly $336,000, funded through an earlier capital improvement plan bond, per the Lewiston Sun Journal. Public Works director Kevin Gagne oversaw the build; fencing went up in August 2024, surface coatings and lines that September.
- The land was not bought for pickleball. The city purchased the 9.8-acre parcel in 2019 for the fire department substation next door. The courts went on the leftover ground.
- Amenities are thin — parking and a port-a-potty. No clubhouse, no pro shop, and no lighting, which matters for the next section.
Why do the courts close at 7 p.m.?
Because the neighbors asked, and the council agreed to leave it alone until the city does something about the sound.
When the complex was first proposed in 2023, the city floated hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., deliberately avoiding early mornings and evenings. The posted hours now start an hour earlier, at 9:00 a.m., but the 7:00 p.m. close has held.
At its June 16, 2026 meeting, the City Council took up an amendment that would have written access times for the North Temple courts and a Little League field into the parks ordinance. Neighbors testified about persistent noise, amplified music, headlights and people staying well past closing. A councilor moved to strip the pickleball courts out of the amendment; that passed unanimously, and the amended motion carried 7–0. Staff were asked to install sound-mitigation panels, revise signage to spell out the hours and the ban on amplified music, and return with an enforcement plan before anyone revisits the hours.
The practical translation: do not show up at 7:30 expecting to play, and do not bring a speaker. This is the same argument playing out in town after town across New England — Mashpee went as far as mandating quieter balls on its town courts rather than lose them. A little restraint on our end is what keeps courts open. Where does Lewiston play indoors in winter?
The Lewiston Memorial Armory gymnasium at 65 Central Avenue — the same building as the Recreation Department office — and this is the most time-sensitive thing on the page, because the season is about to restart.
- Season: all-level drop-in runs October 5, 2026 through May 14, 2027. Beginner sessions run October 6 to May 12.
- All levels: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., plus Thursdays 12:00–2:00 p.m.
- Beginner play: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 12:00–2:00 p.m. A protected beginner block is rarer than it should be, and it is the reason to start here rather than at a club.
- Cost: $3 residents, $4 non-residents, 18 and over. You register per session through the city’s recreation portal.
One wrinkle worth flagging: the department’s description lists all-level play Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Thursday, while the registration record for the same activity lists Monday through Friday. I could not reconcile the two — call the office to confirm a specific day, and expect shifts for holidays and school events.
How busy is it? The Sun Journal photographed the Armory in March 2026 with six courts full on a Wednesday morning round robin. Morning play here is not a rumor.

Lewiston and Auburn function as one pickleball market, and Auburn moved first on a couple of fronts.
