New England has 1,133 places to play pickleball spread across 507 towns in all six states — and the region’s true hotbed isn’t Greater Boston. It’s Vermont. When you measure places to play against population, Vermont leads New England with 16.7 venues per 100,000 residents — nearly three times Massachusetts, which has the most courts overall but ranks fifth of six per capita.

We compiled and maintain the most complete public map of New England pickleball venues we’re aware of. Here’s what the full count reveals.

Key findings

  • 1,133 pickleball venues across New England, in 507 towns spanning all six states.
  • Massachusetts has the most venues overall — 435, or 38% of every place to play in the region.
  • Per capita, the ranking flips. Vermont (16.7 per 100k) and Maine (12.6) more than double Massachusetts (6.2).
  • The region’s three least-populous states — Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire — take the top three per-capita spots.
  • Rhode Island sits last on density: 66 venues, 6.0 per 100,000 residents.

Massachusetts wins the count — but not the game

With 435 venues, Massachusetts has more places to play than Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island combined. That makes sense: it’s by far the most populous New England state, home to Boston and its dense inner suburbs where indoor clubs have opened fast.

But raw totals reward population, not enthusiasm. Divide by residents and a different New England appears — one where the game is woven more tightly into daily life the farther north and more rural you go.

Vermont is New England’s real pickleball capital

Vermont has just 108 venues, the second-fewest in the region. Yet with only about 647,000 residents, that works out to 16.7 places to play per 100,000 people — the highest density in New England and nearly triple the rate in Massachusetts or Rhode Island. Maine ranks second at 12.6, and New Hampshire third at 8.6. The three smallest states, by population, own the top three spots.

Why the rural north dominates

The pattern lines up with how pickleball actually spreads. It needs flat pavement, a net and a few neighbors — not a big metro. In small towns, a church parking lot, a faded tennis court or a town rec center becomes the hub of the week, and word travels fast in a tight community.

Everyone assumes pickleball lives in the big metros, but our map tells the opposite story. The game took off fastest where there’s open space and tight-knit communities — the small towns of Vermont and Maine. Those are the places where a converted tennis court becomes the social center of the week.

Methodology

Figures reflect the Regan Family Pickleball New England court directory as of October 2026 — 1,133 indoor and outdoor venues across 507 towns, compiled and maintained by the site and updated continuously. Per-capita figures use 2023 U.S. Census population estimates, calculated as venues divided by (state population ÷ 100,000). It is the most complete public map of New England pickleball venues we’re aware of.

One honest caveat: these are listed, mapped venues — not an official government registry. Coverage is strongest where players actively report courts, and the smallest towns are the hardest to catalog. If anything, that understates the rural-north lead rather than inflating it. The numbers are a snapshot and shift as new courts open.
