Quick answer: Pickleball in Guilford CT centers on Bittner Park, the town’s 136-acre park on Route 77, where Guilford Parks and Recreation runs seven outdoor pickleball courts. The town built its first four dedicated courts there in 2021. There is also a shared tennis/pickleball setup at Adams Middle School on Church Street, and a members’ club, Guilford Racquet & Swim Club, has indoor and outdoor courts. The town’s own indoor option, a 12-court pop-up in the old Walmart, is gone.

The 30-second version

  • Bittner Park is the hub. Seven outdoor courts on Route 77 (Durham Road), about three miles north of Route 1. It’s the town’s home for leagues and events.
  • It started with four. The Board of Selectmen approved four dedicated courts in 2021, and they opened that October. By May 2025 the town was repainting “courts 1-7.”
  • Adams Middle School is the backup. Two tennis courts on Church Street with a pickleball net kept in the corner. Put it back when you’re done.
  • Indoor means a membership. Guilford Racquet & Swim Club lists 8 indoor and 7 outdoor pickleball courts. It’s a members’ club, though guest and non-member options exist.
  • Charity tournament Oct. 17. “Dink for a Difference” at Bittner Park benefits Guilford Meals on Wheels. It’s for 2.5 to 3.0 players, $75 including lunch.

Guilford built for pickleball early and kept adding to it. The town green gets the postcards, but the courts are up Route 77 at Bittner Park. Guilford also lost an indoor facility that had to leave when the building’s permanent tenant arrived. Here’s where to play today and what the old listings get wrong, from the town’s notices, the local papers and the clubs’ own websites.

Where can you play pickleball in Guilford CT?

There are three places to play in Guilford, and only one of them is a free, dedicated public court:

  • Bittner Park (dedicated, public). The town’s facility listing puts Bittner on Route 77, three miles north of Route 1, with 136 acres, a skate park, a disc golf course, lighted fields, trails and pickleball courts. Our directory lists it as Bittner Park.
  • Adams Middle School (shared tennis courts). The town lists two tennis/pickleball courts at 233 Church Street. When they opened in July 2023, Parks and Recreation said a pickleball net would stay in the corner for players to use, and asked people to move it back afterward.
  • Guilford Racquet & Swim Club (private). A membership club at 420 Church Street with indoor and outdoor pickleball, tennis and paddle tennis. See our listing for Guilford Racquet & Swim Club.

If you’re coming from farther along the shoreline, our guides to pickleball in New Haven and Wallingford cover the nearest bigger clusters, and the Connecticut hub has the whole state.

How did Bittner Park get its courts?

Here’s the short history, from the local papers:

  • Spring 2021: four courts approved. Zip06 reported in June 2021 that the Board of Selectmen had approved a contract for four new dedicated pickleball courts at Bittner Park. The paper said demand had grown in town, especially among seniors.
  • Fall 2021: open early. Construction finished ahead of the original October 1 target. Then-Parks and Recreation Director Rick Maynard scheduled the grand opening for Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
  • 2025: seven courts. In May 2025 Parks and Recreation closed “pickleball courts 1-7” at Bittner for line repainting, so the complex had grown from four courts to seven by then.
  • Summer 2025: a town league. Director Pam Gery’s fall brochure note listed “a new pickleball league” among the summer’s highlights.

We found no town announcement for the three extra courts, so we won’t guess how they were added. Seven courts is a lot for a town this size, and it’s why events like the October tournament can happen here.

An address note: the town lists Bittner only as “Route 77,” Patch uses 1346-1450 Durham Road and the tourism site uses 1390. Same park. Search “Bittner Park, Guilford” in your map app.

What happened to indoor pickleball in Guilford?

In August 2023 Patch reported that Blaze Pickle, a group led by partner Quin Howe, was opening a 12-court indoor facility in the former Walmart on the Boston Post Road. There was a catch from the start. Target was already lined up for the building, so Blaze had a short-term lease from September through May 31. Howe said that when Target was ready, Blaze would pack up and move.

That’s what happened. Blaze Pickle’s website now lists a single location: 175 Lowrey Place in Newington, near Hartford (our listing: Blaze Pickleball). Guilford no longer has a public pay-to-play indoor facility. Any listing still showing indoor courts at the old Walmart is out of date.

Watch for this across New England: empty big-box stores have the ceiling height pickleball needs, but a pop-up only lasts until the landlord signs a permanent tenant. Our indoor pickleball in Connecticut roundup has the permanent options.

What does Guilford Racquet & Swim Club offer?

For year-round play in town, this is the main option. From the club’s own website:

  • Courts: 7 outdoor pickleball courts (3 of them standalone and lighted) and 8 indoor pickleball courts, plus 6 indoor and 6 outdoor tennis courts and 2 heated paddle courts.
  • Programs: week-to-week organized play, clinics, leagues and tournaments, and private or semi-private coaching.
  • Cost: a one-time $500 initiation fee and a 12-month initial agreement, then monthly dues of $100 for an individual, $160 for two people, $200 for a family of three or more, and $60 for juniors 13 to 18.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The club says it may close early depending on reservations.
  • Trying it first: the club says it has guest and non-member options. It doesn’t post prices for them, so call 203-453-4367.

A correction on our end: our own directory listed this club at 12 indoor courts. The club’s site says 8 indoor and 7 outdoor pickleball courts, and we’re fixing our listing to match. When a directory and a venue disagree, go with the venue.

What’s the Dink for a Difference tournament?

It’s a charity event for newer players, and a good first tournament if you’ve been thinking about one. According to Patch:

  • When: Saturday, October 17, 2026, starting at 8:30 a.m. The rain date is October 18.
  • Where: Bittner Park, run in partnership with Guilford Parks and Recreation.
  • Who: a beginner-plus event for players rated 2.5 to 3.0. You can register as a doubles team or as a single and get matched with a partner.
  • Cost: $75 per player, including lunch and coffee, with proceeds going to Guilford Meals on Wheels. Register by phone at 203-453-8359.

Tips for playing in Guilford

  • Call Parks and Recreation for current programs. Oddly, the department’s website doesn’t mention pickleball on its recreation or senior pages, even though it runs a league. The office is at 32 Church Street, 203-453-8068, weekdays 8:30 to 4:30.
  • At Adams, reset the net. It’s a shared tennis court. Move the pickleball net back to the corner when you finish, as the town asked.
  • Plan for November. Bittner is outdoor only. When it gets cold, see our cold-weather pickleball guide or look into an indoor membership.
  • Want lessons? Our New England lessons guide covers how to find a coach.
