Quick answer: Pickleball in Middlebury, Vermont, happens in two town places: the outdoor pickleball courts at Recreation Park, 77 Mary Hogan Drive, and the gym at the Middlebury Recreation Center, 154 Creek Road. Both are run by Middlebury Parks & Recreation. The town lists the outdoor courts in its own booking system, and the rec center gym is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The 30-second version

  • Outdoor: Recreation Park, 77 Mary Hogan Drive, next to the town tennis courts and the Teen Center.
  • Indoor: Middlebury Recreation Center gym, 154 Creek Road, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Call the town, not the directory: Parks & Recreation is 802-458-8015. The numbers on the national directories don’t match it, and one belongs to the Teen Center.
  • New surface: the Recreation Park court complex was refurbished in summer 2024.
  • Court count: the town does not publish one. Directories say four outdoor and three indoor.

Where can you play pickleball in Middlebury?

You can play pickleball in Middlebury at two town-run sites, one outdoor and one indoor. Both appear in the town’s online booking system at middleburyvt.myrec.com.

Site Address Type Hours (town listing)
Recreation Park, Pickleball Courts 77 Mary Hogan Drive Outdoor Sunrise to sunset
Middlebury Recreation Center, Gymnasium 154 Creek Road Indoor 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The booking system lists “Pickleball Courts” as their own area at Recreation Park, separate from the tennis courts, the outdoor basketball court, the softball field and the soccer fields. That matters, because it means the outdoor courts are dedicated, not just lines painted on a tennis court.

East Middlebury’s Harold Curtiss Park, 52 School House Hill Road, shows up in the same system with tennis courts and a basketball court but no pickleball area.

What are the outdoor pickleball courts at Recreation Park like?

The outdoor courts sit in the town’s main park off Mary Hogan Drive, beside the tennis courts, and the whole complex was resurfaced in 2024. The history shows how they got there.

  • 2016: the Addison Independent reported that Mary Hogan Elementary School had a grant to build an outdoor court on the recreation fields next to the town tennis courts.
  • 2022: a resident wrote to the paper that Middlebury had “two lined outdoor PB courts,” both “in need of significant repair,” with 12 to 16 people often waiting to play.
  • 2024: another player wrote in August that the Recreation Department had “just completed an amazing refurbishing of the outdoor tennis – pickleball – basketball court complex at the Middlebury Recreation Park.”

Those last two are letters to the editor, so treat them as players’ accounts, not official specs. The town itself does not publish a court count, a surface type or a net policy. Pickleheads lists four outdoor courts with permanent lines and says you bring your own net, but it does not cite the town, so call before you count on a net being there.

Where can you play indoor pickleball in Middlebury?

The indoor option is the gym at the Middlebury Recreation Center, 154 Creek Road. The town’s Recreation Center page says the building went up in 2015 and calls the gym “state-of-the-art.” The booking system lists it as open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Pickleball took off there fast. In April 2016 the Addison Independent reported two designated pickleball courts at the new center. By January 2017 the paper was describing three courts, with more than 20 players taking turns three days a week. Pickleheads still lists three indoor courts, permanent lines and portable nets.

What I could not find is a current pickleball schedule. On October 16 the gym’s public calendar showed basketball, volleyball, youth programs and private rentals, and none of the town’s online programs was a pickleball session. The town says it sends its program guide on request, so ask for it, or call the Parks & Recreation office (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) before you drive over.

What do the directories get wrong about pickleball in Middlebury?

The national directories list three Middlebury venues and two phone numbers, and checked against the town’s own pages, most of those details are off.

  • “The Teen Center” is almost certainly Recreation Park. Pickleheads lists four courts at The Teen Center with no street address. The Teen Center is at 77 Mary Hogan Drive, the same address as Recreation Park. The Addison Independent placed its building between Mary Hogan Elementary and the town tennis courts. It is a youth drop-in center for ages 12 and up, not a court operator.
  • The phone numbers. The Teen Center listing gives (802) 349-1790, which is the Teen Center’s own line. The rec center listing gives (802) 458-9014. The town lists Parks & Recreation at 802-458-8015.
  • A third listing I couldn’t place. One directory entry, which our own court directory carries too, puts a “Middlebury Recreation Department” at 7 Mahady Court. I found no town facility at that address.
  • The hours. The town’s parks page lists Recreation Park as open 7 a.m. to midnight, while the booking system says sunrise to sunset for the facility. Plan on daylight unless the town tells you otherwise.

Is pickleball free in Middlebury?

Middlebury does not publish a fee for pickleball at either site, and Pickleheads lists both the outdoor and indoor courts as free. I would not treat the indoor courts as free until the rec center confirms it. Town programs register through the myrec site, and Middlebury runs a scholarship program for its recreation offerings.

Middlebury Indoor Tennis, 360 Boardman Street, is a membership club run by the nonprofit Addison Community Athletics Foundation. Bounce lists it for pickleball, but its own homepage only mentions tennis, so call (802) 388-3733 before you count on it.
