Quick answer: Pickleball paddle spin RPM depends far more on when a paddle was made than on what it costs or what its face is made of. Across 534 paddles with a lab-measured spin number in our catalog, the median climbs from 1,584 RPM for 2021 releases to 2,162 RPM for 2026 releases. Face material and price move it by about 100 RPM.
The 30-second version
- Newer spins more. Median measured spin rose by about 580 RPM between 2021 and 2026 releases.
- The trend holds inside every group we checked: 16mm cores, carbon faces, Gen 2 builds and paddles under $150.
- Face material matters less than you’d think. T700 paddles have the highest median (2,135 RPM), but the gap to standard carbon is only 137 RPM.
- Price barely matters. Paddles under $100 median 1,966 RPM; paddles at $250 and up, 2,078.
Spin is the number everyone asks me about at New England demo days. Here’s what our lab-measured catalog says actually drives it.

What is pickleball paddle spin RPM?
Spin RPM is how many revolutions per minute a paddle puts on the ball in a standardized lab hit. Higher means more bite on topspin drives, rolls and serves. The numbers here are independently measured by Pickleball Studio and/or John Kew, not by us, so they’re comparable within the catalog but not to readings from other rigs.
Do newer paddles really spin more?
Yes, and it’s the clearest pattern in the data. Of the 534 paddles with a measured spin number, 320 also have a release year. Here’s the median by year:
| Release year | Paddles | Median spin | 2,100 RPM or more |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 16 | 1,584 | 0% |
| 2022 | 22 | 1,628 | 5% |
| 2023 | 74 | 1,898 | 4% |
| 2024 | 58 | 1,979 | 3% |
| 2025 | 81 | 2,056 | 28% |
| 2026 | 68 | 2,162 | 72% |
The correlation between release year and spin is 0.74. It isn’t just a newer mix of builds: The rise shows up within 16mm cores (1,616 in 2022 to 2,176 in 2026), within carbon faces (1,584 in 2021 to 2,098 in 2026) and within Gen 2 builds (1,624 in 2022 to 2,005 in 2025).
Does face material change spin RPM?
Only a little. Face material moves the median by about 137 RPM, from standard carbon at the bottom to T700 at the top:
- T700 carbon: 2,135 RPM (44 paddles). See our T700 guide.
- Fiberglass: 2,075 RPM (47). More in our fiberglass guide.
- Aramid (Kevlar): 2,016 RPM (35).
- Other carbon: 1,998 RPM (323).
That spread is less than a quarter of the gap between 2021 and 2026 releases. Gen 3 and Gen 4 paddles median about 2,100, Gen 1 and Gen 2 about 2,000 (see Gen 3 vs Gen 4).
Do expensive paddles spin more?
Not much. The correlation between price and spin is 0.17. Paddles under $100 median 1,966 RPM, $150–199 paddles 2,002, and $250-plus paddles 2,078. Swing weight (0.05) and static weight (−0.08) show almost no link at all. If spin is your priority, a recent mid-priced paddle is a better bet than an older premium one.

Can a lab spin number tell me if my paddle is legal?
No. Since October 1, 2026, USA Pickleball certifies new paddles at 2,100 RPM or less using its own camera system and a Franklin test ball. We used 2,100 above only as a reference line. Our spin rate test explainer and the New England guide to the cap cover who it affects.
Two caveats: lab methods may have changed since 2021, and grit wears with play.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good spin RPM for a pickleball paddle?
In our catalog the median is 2,030 RPM. The bottom 10% measure under about 1,660 and the top 10% above about 2,260, so anything over 2,100 is high.
What makes a pickleball paddle spin more?
In our data, release year matters most: median measured spin rose from 1,584 RPM for 2021 paddles to 2,162 for 2026 paddles. Face material and price move the median by roughly 100 RPM.
Do carbon fiber paddles spin more than fiberglass?
Not by default. T700 carbon has the highest median at 2,135 RPM, but fiberglass (2,075) beats standard carbon (1,998).
Is a paddle over 2,100 RPM illegal?
Not based on these numbers. USA Pickleball certifies paddles with its own spin test, which uses a different setup from the labs that measured our catalog.
Does paddle spin wear off?
Grit and textured faces wear with play, so spin can drop over a paddle’s life. Our guide to how often to replace a paddle covers the signs.
