Quick answer: Pickleball paddle twist weight measures how well a paddle resists twisting in your hand when the ball hits off-center. Higher means more forgiving. In Pickleball Studio’s measurements of 607 paddles, the widest paddles score highest, and weight and price barely matter.

The 30-second version

  • The middle half scores 5.9 to 6.7. The median of 607 measured paddles is 6.25.
  • Width is what counts. Widebodies have a median of 6.85, hybrids 6.41 and elongated paddles 6.04.
  • Same model, wider shape, higher number. The widebody version won in 24 of 24 same-model pairs.
  • Ounces barely predict it. Static weight and swing weight both show little link.
  • Money doesn’t buy it. Paddles over $250 had a lower median than paddles under $100.

Twist weight is the partner to swing weight, which we covered two days ago. It matters to anyone who misses the center now and then, so I sorted every measured twist weight to see what drives it.

What is pickleball paddle twist weight?

Pickleball paddle twist weight is a measurement of how much a paddle resists rotating around its handle when the ball strikes away from the center line. A high number means an off-center hit stays steadier and goes closer to where you aimed.

Reviewers often call this stability, or a bigger sweet spot. Pickleball Studio measures it for each paddle it tests. The measurements in this post are Studio’s; the counts and medians are our own arithmetic on 607 usable entries, read October 15, 2026.

What counts as a low or high twist weight?

A twist weight under about 5.5 is low and anything above 7.0 is high, with most paddles packed between 6.0 and 6.5.

Twist weight Paddles Share
Under 5.5 45 7%
5.5 to 5.99 133 22%
6.0 to 6.49 222 37%
6.5 to 6.99 132 22%
7.0 to 7.49 64 11%
7.5 and up 11 2%

The full range runs from 4.29, a discontinued 2021 Gearbox CX14E, to 8.34. These bands are ours, not an official scale.

Does paddle shape change twist weight?

Yes, shape is the biggest driver of twist weight we found, because a wider face puts more mass far from the handle’s center line.

  • By shape. Widebody median 6.85 (169 paddles), hybrid 6.41 (133), elongated 6.04 (291).
  • Same-model pairs. Where a brand sells one model in both elongated and widebody, the widebody scored higher in all 24 pairs. It also had the lower swing weight in all 23 pairs with clean swing data.
  • Hybrids sit between. In 25 elongated and hybrid pairs, the hybrid scored higher in 22.
  • Width beats weight. Across 428 paddles with a listed width, width correlates with twist weight at r = 0.58. Static weight manages 0.19, and swing weight 0.06.

That trade is the core of our elongated vs widebody comparison: the long shapes add reach and power, and the wide shapes add forgiveness.

Does core thickness or price matter?

Core thickness matters a little, and price does not seem to matter at all. In 62 same-model, same-shape pairs sold in a roughly 14mm version and a roughly 16mm version, the thicker one scored higher in 55. That fits our 14mm vs 16mm study, where the 16mm twin also ran heavier.

On price, paddles under $100 had a median of 6.31 and paddles at $250 and up had 6.14, using Studio’s listed prices.

Which paddles combine high twist weight with a light swing?

Of the 391 paddles Studio lists as tested rather than discontinued, 32 score 7.0 or higher in twist weight while keeping swing weight at 112 or below. Every one of the 32 is a widebody. Five examples:

  • CRBN 2X 16mm: twist 7.57, swing 109.
  • Spartus Apollo: twist 7.48, swing 107.
  • Bread & Butter Loco Widebody: twist 7.34, swing 110.
  • Chorus CODA Widebody Harmony Grit: twist 7.29, swing 108.6.
  • Diadem BluCore Max 16mm: twist 7.25, swing 104.

We have no deal with any of these brands. For more picks, see our best widebody paddles, or start with the Paddle Finder and the compare tool.

Who should shop by twist weight?

Shop by twist weight if you mishit often, are newer to the game, or play a blocking, soft game at the kitchen. It also helps outdoors in New England this time of year, when wind and cold, harder balls make clean contact harder.

If you love your elongated paddle but want more stability, Studio’s lead tape guide says weight on the sides adds stability and makes the sweet spot feel larger. Expect the swing to get heavier as well.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good twist weight for a pickleball paddle?

About 6.5 or higher is above average. The median of 607 measured paddles is 6.25, and about 12% reach 7.0.

Is twist weight the same as swing weight?

No. Swing weight is how heavy the paddle feels to swing. Twist weight is how steady it stays on off-center hits. The two are nearly unrelated.

Do widebody paddles have a higher twist weight?

Yes. Widebodies have a median of 6.85 against 6.04 for elongated paddles, and the widebody version won all 24 same-model pairs.

Does a heavier paddle have more twist weight?

Only slightly. Where the weight sits, especially out at the edges, matters far more.

Do expensive paddles have a bigger sweet spot?

Not by this measure. Paddles listed at $250 and up had a lower median twist weight than paddles under $100.
