Quick answer: High school pickleball in Massachusetts is still a club sport. It isn’t an MIAA-sanctioned sport, and the MIAA’s 2025-27 handbook never mentions it. But the path changed in November 2025. The MIAA now has an “Emerging Sport” category, applications are due October 1 each year, and a sport needs about 57 schools behind it to qualify. The first state league had 11 teams in 2024.
The 30-second version
- New route, new deadline. On Nov. 12, 2025 the MIAA board voted 23-0 for an Emerging Sport process. Applications are due October 1.
- The bar is 15%. An applicant sport needs 15% of MIAA member schools sponsoring it, or principals’ letters to match. That’s 57 schools right now.
- Tournaments come at 20%. Championship status, meaning an MIAA tournament, needs 76 schools, and an emerging sport gets three years to get there.
- Pickleball is well short. The 2024 debut season had 11 teams. Organizers said another 10 or 11 schools had asked to join.
- Two earlier tries narrowly failed under the old rule-change process, according to organizer Greg Rota.
A few Massachusetts high schools play pickleball each fall, but none of it counts as an official sport yet. The rules for getting there changed last November, and this year’s application deadline is October 1. Here’s how the process works and where high school pickleball in Massachusetts stands, from the MIAA’s own rules and reporting on the league.

How does a sport get added by the MIAA now?
Adding a sport used to mean a proposal moving through the MIAA’s two-year rule-change cycle and its sport committees. On November 12, 2025 the MIAA Board of Directors voted 23-0 to send new sports straight to the board, the Boston Globe reported. The MIAA’s own page sets out the steps:
- A school leader applies. A principal or another MIAA member-school leader has to start the application.
- Show 15% sponsorship. At least 15% of member schools must sponsor the sport with full participation opportunities, and principals’ support letters must reach the same 15%. The Globe put that at 57 schools.
- File by October 1. MIAA staff review the application, then the applicants present to the board at a regular meeting.
- Nine review factors, including health and safety, growth potential, budget, equity and the availability of trained officials.
- Then 20% for a tournament. An approved emerging sport gets a sport committee and three years to reach 20% of schools (76). At that point the board can grant championship status, meaning an MIAA tournament.
Those two numbers mean the MIAA currently counts about 380 member schools. The Globe also reported that a new sport needs backing from its national governing body. For pickleball, that’s USA Pickleball.
Where does high school pickleball in Massachusetts stand?
The debut season was fall 2024. According to USA Pickleball’s December 2024 report:
- 11 high schools played. Most were in central and western Massachusetts. Beverly was the only district from the Boston area.
- It ran late August to mid-October, finishing with a state championship before the frost.
- The format came from tennis. Each match has five parts: boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles, plus mixed doubles. Win three and your team wins.
- It was a club sport, following rugby’s path of starting as a club before seeking sanction.
Courts came from towns. In Westfield, the city let Westfield Technical Academy use the eight fenced courts at the Municipal Playground on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Why hasn’t pickleball become an MIAA sport yet?
It came close. Greg Rota, a retired athletic director and USA Pickleball Ambassador who has led the push, said a rule change to make it a high school sport was proposed twice and narrowly failed twice. In late 2024 he said about two dozen schools wanted to co-sponsor another try.
We checked the MIAA’s current documents for signs of the next attempt:
- The 2025-27 handbook doesn’t mention pickleball.
- The rule-change proposals packet for 2027-29, dated September 1, 2026, has no pickleball proposal. That fits, because new sports now go through the Emerging Sport application, not rule changes.
- We couldn’t find published results for a 2025 or 2026 high school season, or any public sign that an application is being filed this year. If you coach or run one of these teams, we’d like to hear from you.
What would it take?
Eleven teams plus the 10 or 11 schools that asked to join makes about 22, well under half of the 57 required. Here’s how players can help:
- Talk to your school’s athletic director. The application has to come from a school leader, and every principal’s letter counts toward the 15%.
- Offer courts. Free weekday-afternoon court time is what makes a school team possible.
- Donate gear. On the North Shore, Marblehead’s club has given more than 100 paddles to local schools.

Frequently asked questions
Is pickleball a high school sport in Massachusetts?
Not officially. Pickleball is not an MIAA-sanctioned sport, and the 2025-27 MIAA handbook does not mention it. Some high schools have played it as a club sport since a pilot league launched in fall 2024.
How many schools does pickleball need to become an MIAA sport?
To qualify as an MIAA Emerging Sport, a sport needs sponsorship from 15 percent of member schools, currently 57, backed by principal support letters. To reach Championship Sport status with an MIAA tournament, it needs 20 percent, currently 76 schools.
When is the MIAA deadline for new sport applications?
Applications for Emerging Sport status are due to the MIAA by October 1. MIAA staff review them, and the applicants then present to the Board of Directors at a regularly scheduled meeting.
How many teams played in the first Massachusetts high school pickleball season?
Eleven high schools played in the inaugural fall 2024 season, mostly in central and western Massachusetts, with Beverly the only district from the Boston area. The season ran from late August to a state championship in mid-October.
How does a high school pickleball match work?
The Massachusetts pilot borrowed the high school tennis format. A team match has five matches, boys and girls singles and doubles plus mixed doubles, and the team that wins at least three takes the match.
