Quick answer: Fake pickleball paddles have been widely reported since 2025, and now players are flagging suspect balls too. On October 20, 2026, The Dink reported that Ed Ju warned buyers about suspected fake Life Time balls. Buy from the brand or a retailer it authorizes, and treat a price far below list as a warning.
The 30-second version
- The news: Ed Ju said a ball “flew off my paddle” and tested very differently from a regular Life Time ball.
- The background: TruFoam paddle knockoffs appeared within weeks of the 2025 launch, some for $17.
- The price check: of 826 priced paddles in our catalog, only 2 list under $50.
- The fix: check the seller, compare to list price, and look the model up on USA Pickleball’s lists.

What happened with the fake pickleballs?
In an Instagram post covered by The Dink, Ed Ju said he switched to a second ball for his second game and it “flew off my paddle.” He said it looked almost like an indoor ball, and later tests showed a “huge difference” from a regular Life Time ball. He warned players to be careful buying in bulk, and cited a price of $6.50 per ball.
One player’s account doesn’t prove where the ball came from. Treat it as a reason to check your seller.
How common are fake pickleball paddles?
Fake pickleball paddles are common enough that the UPA-A, which The Dink describes as the governing body of U.S. pro pickleball, is organizing against them. The record so far:
- Fast copies: lookalikes of CRBN’s TruFoam paddles hit Alibaba, Temu and Facebook within weeks of the early-2025 launch, some for $17 (The Dink, November 2025).
- A big-box listing: UPA-A President Jason Aspes bought a JOOLA Perseus Pro IV on Walmart.com from a third-party seller for $129. It was a clone with the NFC chip, but no branded grip and no edge-guard window showing the core (December 2025).
- An industry response: Aspes emailed sanctioned paddle makers on November 27, 2025, calling counterfeits “an existential threat,” and shared a best-practices playbook.
- The scale: one brand told The Dink it reported nearly 400 counterfeit companies on Temu and Alibaba in a single year.
What does a real pickleball paddle cost?

| Paddle | List price | Reported fake |

| CRBN TruFoam Genesis | $279.99 | $17 (6% of list) |

How do you spot fake pickleball gear?
You spot fake pickleball gear mostly by checking the seller and the price before you buy, because a good copy can fool you in your hand.
- Check who is selling: read the “sold by” line. Buy from the brand or an authorized retailer.
- Compare to list: look the model up in our paddle database. Half of list from an unknown seller is a red flag.
- Use USA Pickleball’s lists: the approved paddle list shows each model with photos, and the approved ball list had 394 balls on October 21.
- Check the details: grip, edge guard, fonts and sizing all gave away the Pro IV clone.
- Test before bulk: buy one pack of balls and play it before you order a case.

What should New England players do?
New England players should buy where they can hold the gear first: a club pro shop, a local racquet store or a demo day. If your club uses a house ball, buy it through the club. Massachusetts-based Franklin Sports, for one, has 13 entries on USA Pickleball’s approved ball list. If you think you got a fake, tell the brand. Not sure what to buy? Try the Paddle Finder.
