Where can you play pickleball in York?

Pickleball in York — pickleball

York is unusual among the Maine beach towns in that the town itself runs the pickleball program, and it runs it well. York Parks and Recreation operates two sites, one outdoor and one indoor, and keeps the full schedule on its Adult Programs page, which I read on October 16, 2026. Both sites use permanent lines, and staff handle the setup for the staffed sessions.

Site Season Where
York High School, upper courts (outdoor) June 22 – Sept 25 1 Robert Stevens Drive, closest to the turf field
York Middle School gymnasium (indoor) Sept 20 – June 14 30 Organug Road

Both addresses come straight from the town’s own school facilities page, so you are not chasing a directory pin that may be stale. The outdoor courts sit on school grounds, which means weekday daytime access can be limited while school is in session, and the indoor gym follows the school calendar too. There is no play on Thanksgiving, November 27, or on December 25.

What does it cost, and how do the punch cards work?

You do not pay per court or reserve a time. Instead the town sells a punch card and you drop in. The town is blunt about it: a punch card must be purchased to take part in the pickleball, basketball and volleyball programs. The pricing is the same indoors and out:

  • 5-visit punch card: $20.
  • 20-visit punch card: $80.
  • Season pass: $200, good for one year from the date you buy it.

The programs are for adults 18 and older. You can buy a card online through the Parks and Recreation registration catalog or in person at the office at 200 US Route 1. If you are only in York for a long weekend, the 5-visit card is the sensible buy; a week of mornings will not use it up.

When is open play? The weekly schedule

This is where York earns its keep. The outdoor season runs a full, legible weekly rhythm rather than a single mystery session:

  • Monday, 5-7 p.m.: beginner and novice levels, with beginner lessons.
  • Tuesday, 8-10 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.: open play, all levels.
  • Wednesday, 5-7 p.m.: open play, all levels.
  • Thursday, 4-6 p.m.: beginner and novice with lessons; 6-8 p.m.: intermediate-and-up round robins, staffed.
  • Friday, 8-10 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.: open play, all levels.

Indoors at the middle school, Sunday is the day: beginner and novice play with beginner lessons from 4 to 6 p.m., then open play on courts 1 and 2 from 6 to 8 p.m., with beginner lessons continuing on court 3. If you are new, the beginner-and-lesson blocks are the friendliest place to start. If you want a real game, aim for the Thursday round robins or any all-levels open-play window.

Are there beginner lessons in York?

Yes, and they are not a separate paid clinic. The free beginner lessons are folded into the regular Monday, Thursday and Sunday sessions, so your punch card covers the instruction as well as the court time. That is a genuinely good deal for a first-timer, and it is rarer than it should be. If you want to keep improving past the beginner block, our New England coaching directory lists instructors by region, and the Paddle Finder will match a paddle to how you actually play before you spend money on gear.

What about private clubs and indoor play nearby?

York also has a couple of private, membership-based clubs, and southern Maine now has a dedicated indoor pickleball facility on Route 1. I am not going to quote their court counts or fees here, because the only sources I could find for those are national directories that conflict and go stale, and this site does not list a members-only court as if it were public. If you want a club, call it directly and ask about guest or drop-in access. What I can stand behind is the town program above.

York sits at the very bottom of the Maine coast, a few minutes from the New Hampshire Seacoast and the Portsmouth-Kittery line, so your options widen fast if you are willing to cross a bridge. For the bigger picture, see our Maine pickleball hub and the full New England court directory, which is where we keep the venues we can actually verify.

A New England note

York is a model of the cheap, sustainable approach I wish more towns would copy: no bond issue, no new concrete, just lines on existing school courts, a gym on Sundays, and a $20 punch card that pays for staff and lessons. Towns that do want to build dedicated courts can often fund them without raising taxes; our guide to pickleball court grants walks through how New England towns have pulled that off. York shows you can grow the game long before the grant money ever lands.
