Short answer: Here is how to become a pro pickleball player in 2026. You sign a player contract with the PPA Tour, and the tour lists three ways to earn one: break into the top 50 of the World Pickleball Ranking, finish at the top of the PPA Challenger Series, or be recommended by an MLP team and approved by a standards committee.
The 30-second version
- “Pro” means a contract: the PPA Tour calls a player with a signed contract a Touring Pro, and that contract is also what lets you play Major League Pickleball.
- The front door: the PPA Challenger Series. Every stop has a pro division with a $10,000 prize pool, and the top uncontracted players are invited to a Showdown where eight leave with a 2027 contract.
- The side door: the independent APP Tour, which signs its own pros and runs events open from 3.0 up to pro.
- What nobody publishes: a minimum DUPR to turn pro, or the size of each contract.

What does it mean to be a pro pickleball player?
On the PPA Tour, being a pro means signing an official player contract. The tour’s How It Works page puts it in one line: sign an official player contract “and you become a Touring Pro.”
That definition matters more than it used to. The PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball now sit under one parent company, Pickleball Inc., formed on May 1, 2026, with a $225 million investment led by Apollo Sports Capital, according to Pulse 2.0’s report on the deal.
Two things follow from that structure:
- Contracted players get main-draw priority. Spots go first to teams of two contracted pros, then teams with one, then uncontracted players in World Pickleball Ranking order.
- MLP is contract-only. MLP’s 2026 season announcement says only UPA-signed players could take part in the February free agency draft. See how the MLP draft works.
You can still play pro events without a contract. Players who miss the main draw “can play their way in through a qualifier,” the PPA says. But the contract is the line between playing in pro events and being a pro.
What are the three ways to earn a PPA Tour contract?
The PPA lists three routes to Touring Pro status on its How It Works page:
- Rank your way in. Break into the top 50 of the World Pickleball Ranking. The ranking covers the past 52 weeks and weights gender doubles at 50%, mixed at 35% and singles at 15%, counting only your best 14 results in each.
- Win your way in. Finish at the top of the PPA Challenger Series (more below).
- Get recommended. An MLP team or a committee member recommends you, and the UPA Standards Committee approves it.
The first route is a catch-22 for most people. Big events are hard to enter without a contract, and you need results in big events to climb the ranking. That is why the Challenger Series exists.
What is the PPA Challenger Series?
The PPA describes its Challenger Series as “a grassroots tour designed to provide aspiring pickleball professionals a pathway to the PPA Tour.” It is the most direct route for a strong amateur. Here is what the PPA’s page says:
- Amateur and pro on the same weekend. Every stop has amateur divisions plus a Pro Division with a $10,000 prize pool, split among the podium finishers.
- Ranking points. Each stop awards 125 or 250 points to the champion, depending on its level.
- The stars are kept out. PPA Tour pros ranked inside the top 20 of a division cannot enter that division at a Challenger.
- A win buys a wild card. A Challenger pro champion gets a wild-card entry into the main draw of a PPA Tour Open of their choosing.
- The Showdown. The highest-ranked uncontracted players are invited to Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas, on November 5-7, 2026, and “8 players leave signed,” with a 2027 PPA Tour contract.
It works in practice. Connor Mogle won the 2025 Showdown and earned a PPA Tour contract, Pickleball.com reported.
What happens after you sign?
New pros start at the bottom of the contract ladder. The PPA lists three tiers, and it says prize money is the main difference between them:
- Futures: where every new signing starts, re-evaluated after 12 months.
- Standard: a Futures player who climbs into the top 25 of the World Pickleball Ranking moves up to Standard.
- Gold: the top contract level.
One source conflict to know about: The Dink’s June 2025 report on the contract talks described a six-month minimum and different promotion triggers. The PPA’s own page is newer, so I would go by the 12 months and top 25.
The tours do not publish what each tier pays. The overall pools are public. Pickleball.com reported $11 million a year in guaranteed prize money and $15 million in performance-based prize money across the PPA and MLP from 2026. Our guide to how much pro pickleball players make covers the rest.

Is the APP Tour another way to turn pro?
Yes. The APP is independent of Pickleball Inc., and it signs its own players. Our PPA vs APP guide explains how the two tours differ. The APP’s own announcements give the useful numbers:
- Signings. “Nearly 70” pros signed with the APP after the start of 2026, and its pro prize money doubles from $1.5 million in 2026 to $3 million in 2027, the APP said in August.
- A young-player track. The 2026 Touring Pro class is 13 players aged 19 to 24, picked for “talent and pro potential” and given financial commitments and wild-card entries. The APP also runs APP Next, a circuit for players 23 and under.
- Open entry. The APP Championships in Fort Lauderdale in December are open to every level from 3.0 to pro.
What DUPR do you need to turn pro?
No tour publishes a minimum DUPR for pro events or for a contract, and I could not find a reputable source that names a typical pro DUPR.
What DUPR data does show is how rare that level is. About 1% of active rated doubles players are at 5.0 or higher, according to The Dink’s look at DUPR percentiles. The PPA ranks pros by results in its own events, not by DUPR. If you are not sure where you sit, start with our ratings guide.
How to become a pro pickleball player from New England
This part is my advice, not a tour rule. No Challenger stop is guaranteed to come to New England, so plan on travel. Before that, prove yourself at home:
- Win where you are. Medal consistently at 4.5 and then 5.0 in regional events. Our Massachusetts tournament guide and the tournament calendar list them.
- Close the specific gaps. At this level the separators are hands, resets and partner play. Work through the 4.5 to 5.0 jump, hands battles and stacking.
- Play doubles first. Gender doubles is half of the World Pickleball Ranking, and mixed is another 35%. A settled partner is worth more than a singles trophy.
- Enter one Challenger. Play the pro division and see how far off you are. A first-round loss there will teach you more than a 5.0 gold medal.
- Budget for it. Pickleball.com notes that pro earnings are concentrated among a small group of top players, and most earn considerably less.

Frequently asked questions
How do you become a pro pickleball player?
On the PPA Tour you become a pro by signing a player contract. The tour lists three routes: reach the top 50 of the World Pickleball Ranking, finish at the top of the PPA Challenger Series, or be recommended by an MLP team and approved by the UPA Standards Committee.
Can anyone play in a pro pickleball tournament?
Uncontracted players can enter PPA events, but contracted pros get main-draw spots first. Players who miss the main draw can try to play in through a qualifier. Challenger Series pro divisions and the APP Championships are also open to non-contracted players.
What is the PPA Challenger Series?
It is the PPA’s grassroots tour for aspiring pros. Each stop has a pro division with a $10,000 prize pool, and the top uncontracted players are invited to a Showdown where eight earn a 2027 PPA Tour contract.
What DUPR rating do pro pickleball players have?
No tour publishes a minimum DUPR for turning pro, and pro rankings are based on results in tour events. About 1% of active rated doubles players are rated 5.0 or higher.
Do you need a contract to play Major League Pickleball?
Yes. For 2026, MLP said only UPA-signed players could take part in its free agency draft. Each of the 20 teams carries three men and three women.
