Why does that create a “specialist”?
Because singles and doubles are different sports wearing the same shoes. Plenty of touring pros are excellent doubles players who rarely play singles, so if both of your men are doubles-first, a Dreambreaker is a coin flip you would rather not take. Teams started rostering someone whose singles game is the strength and subbing them in for exactly those points. Against a doubles specialist pressed into singles duty, that is close to a free advantage.
You can see it in roster construction. The Columbus Sliders — described by The Dink as the defending champions — traded for Judit Castillo partly for the singles she gives them. Per The Kitchen, she flew in the day of an event and was in a Dreambreaker within roughly two hours of reaching the venue, winning her points on arrival. That is the job.
What does the job actually look like?
The Dink published a first-person account on July 28 from a Dreambreaker specialist on that Columbus roster, and the detail that sticks is the ratio: arrive early, hit for 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes jump into rec doubles to stay loose, then spend a full competition day preparing for a moment that might never happen. If the team wins or loses in regulation, the specialist never plays.
That is an unusual kind of pressure — walking on cold, late in a long day, with the event on the line and no rhythm to fall back on.
Why the standings math makes it worth it
MLP does not treat a Dreambreaker as a coin flip you shrug off. Each match is worth three standings points, split like this:

That single point is the whole argument. Across a 20-team season of nine regular-season events plus a mid-season event, with playoffs now expanded to 12 teams over three weeks, those margins decide who is still playing in the fall.
