Fenced outdoor town courts, the kind of setup for pickleball in East Greenwich RI

Quick answer: Pickleball in East Greenwich RI means two free, dedicated outdoor courts at Academy Field on Peirce Street, next to the Swift Community Center. They opened in August 2024 and are the town’s first pickleball courts. Play is first come, first served, with no reservations, but a Senior Center program uses the courts on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. For lessons, the town runs fall classes and an advanced round robin on the Frenchtown Road courts.

The 30-second version

  • Two courts, free, no reservations. Academy Field has two dedicated pickleball courts next to the Swift Community Center. Show up and rotate in.
  • Skip weekday mornings early in the week. A Senior Center program has the courts Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
  • The hours depend on who you ask. The town’s booking system lists 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The local paper’s editor says 8:30 a.m. to sunset.
  • Lessons are at Frenchtown, not Academy. Fall 2026 beginner/intermediate lessons and an advanced round robin run Wednesday evenings on the Frenchtown Road courts.
  • Two courts cost about $320,000. The 2021 grant application estimated $129,240. The winning bid in 2024 was $319,850. That included rebuilding the basketball court next door.

East Greenwich was late to pickleball. It didn’t have a single dedicated court until the summer of 2024, and until then people played on painted lines on a basketball court or squeezed onto the tennis courts. The two courts it built are nice, free and well placed. The paper trail behind them is worth knowing about, because every town in New England is pricing the same project right now. Here is where to play, when to go and what those two courts actually cost, taken from the town’s own documents.

Where can you play pickleball in East Greenwich RI?

The town has two places to play, and only one of them is a dedicated pickleball court:

  • Academy Field (dedicated, free). Two outdoor pickleball courts at Academy Field, 121 Peirce Street, next to the Swift Community Center. These are the only dedicated public pickleball courts in town.
  • Frenchtown Courts (lessons and round robins). The town’s court complex on Frenchtown Road, which also has tennis, basketball, a playground and picnic tables. East Greenwich Recreation runs its pickleball classes here. Our directory lists it as Frenchtown Road.

That’s a thin list for a town this size. Most local players also drive to Warwick or North Kingstown for indoor play. See our guides to pickleball in Warwick and North Kingstown, the statewide indoor pickleball in Rhode Island roundup, and our Rhode Island pickleball hub.

How do the Academy Field courts work?

  • No reservations. When the courts opened, the town said there would be no reservation process: first come, first served. Expect the usual next-up rotation when it’s busy. Our pickleball etiquette guide covers how that works when a crowd shows up.
  • Senior mornings. The Senior Center, which is based in the Swift Community Center next door, uses the courts for a program on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Plan around it.
  • No fee. Nothing to pay and nothing to sign up for.
  • Bring your own gear. Nothing in the town’s materials mentions loaner paddles or balls at Academy Field, so bring a paddle and a few balls.

What are the Academy Field court hours?

This is where two official-looking sources disagree. The town’s RecDesk facility listing shows Academy Field as available 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. But when a reader asked about hours under East Greenwich News’ opening story, the paper’s editor replied that the courts open at 8:30 a.m. and close at sunset.

My guess is that the RecDesk hours are a booking-system default rather than a gate time, because the town’s Frenchtown listing shows exactly the same 8-to-5 block. That’s only a guess, though. On a long summer evening it makes a real difference, so if you plan to play after 5, call Community Services & Parks at 401-886-8626 first.

What did two pickleball courts cost East Greenwich?

This is the part I found most useful, because it’s what every town committee in New England is trying to work out. The whole trail is public:

Date Step Number
Nov 22, 2021 Town Council votes 4–0 to apply for a state DEM recreation grant $129,240 total estimate ($100,000 grant + $29,240 town)
2022 Grant awarded $100,000
Mar 27, 2023 Design contract on the council agenda (BETA Group, Lincoln RI) Up to $18,750
Jan 22, 2024 Construction bid awarded to Narragansett Improvement Co. $319,850
Aug 29, 2024 Courts open to the public 2 courts

A few things stand out:

  • The bid was about 2.5 times the original estimate. The 2021 application priced the project at $129,240. The winning bid in January 2024 was $319,850.
  • That isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison. The built project also rebuilt the neighboring basketball court. The original grant budget covered two courts, a small shade shelter with seating, an accessible path and one accessible parking space.
  • The state’s share stayed fixed, so the town absorbed the difference. East Greenwich News reported the funding as the $100,000 state grant plus $103,000 from the parks impact fund and $117,000 from the unassigned capital fund. The town’s share went from about $29,000 to about $220,000.
  • The cheapest bid was thrown out. A $306,000 bid from Hartford Paving was disqualified for not showing experience building athletic courts. The third bid came in at $487,500.
  • It opened about a year late. The grant application targeted July 2023. The courts opened at the end of August 2024.

If your town is applying for a state grant right now, East Greenwich is a good reason to budget for bids to come in well above the application estimate. Our pickleball court grants guide covers where the money comes from.

Where can you take pickleball lessons in East Greenwich?

The Fall 2026 Community Services & Parks program guide lists two pickleball programs. Both run Wednesdays at the Frenchtown Courts, both are taught by Kristen Coker, and both run September 9 through October 14:

  • Beginner & Intermediate Lessons, 4:30–5:30 p.m. $80 for residents, $90 for non-residents. The class covers the basics for new players, and for intermediates it works on shot production, shot selection, dink control, court positioning and consistency.
  • Advanced Round Robin, 5:30–6:30 p.m. $110 for residents, $120 for non-residents. It’s for players who can control both fast and soft shots.

Registration is on the town’s RecDesk site, egrecreation.recdesk.com. One oddity: the guide’s welcome letter mentions adult recreational leagues in “basketball, volleyball, badminton, and pickleball,” but the guide itself lists no pickleball league. The two Wednesday programs are the only pickleball listings in it. If you were hoping for a winter indoor league, ask the office before assuming there is one. If you’d rather work with a private coach, see our New England lessons guide.

What’s changing at the Swift Community Center?

The Senior Center next to Academy Field is being expanded. In the fall guide, Community Services Director Andy Wade writes that the project is in its final stretch, with completion expected in October 2026. It adds two dedicated classrooms for the senior population. Nothing in the guide says the expansion adds courts, but it does make Academy Field even more of a senior hub, and that’s who the courts were built for. The 2021 application said so directly.
